  1. Why do you think there are bite marks on Garrett’s pencil?  What does that tell you about his feelings about writing?
  2. The teacher is seen wearing a red and white polka dot dress.  My mom is a retired teacher and would always wear a red and white polka dot shirt on the first day of school so her Kindergarten students could find her.  The teacher’s likeliness resembles my mom as well.
  3. A brass bell is seen on the teacher’s desk.  My mom gifted me her bell when she retired.
  4. There is a page at the beginning with a bookshelf.  Is there anything on this bookshelf that you recognize from my other books?
  5. Garrett’s sister is named Quinn.  Can you think of another book title of mine that has a similar character name?  This is a subtle nod to that book.

Easter Eggs from the illustrator of Get Out Your PaperRochelle Steder

  1. On the page with Quinn, my daughter Emma has a green fork like the one that is flying through the air.
  2. On the page with Garrett’s bedroom, I played a lot of sports as a kid so I included the baseball, basketball, and trophy as a nod to my many years in sports.  Also, my son Arthur loves fire trucks so I included one on this page.
  3. The page that has a creek is based on a creek that I grew up next to.  I would play there with my sister and friends.  We always came home itchy from the mosquitos and stinging nettle.
  4. When we see Keith, he is based on Arthur.  The seal stuffie is his favorite toy named Icy.  The dinosaur and monster truck are inspired by his toys as well.  You’ll also see an E and A on the blocks to represent my kid’s names.
  5. Look at the Writer’s Wall of Fame page and you will see a cat in a picture frame.  That is my late beloved cat, Tsunami.
  6. When you see the hallway and lockers at the end, look closely at the boy with the lunch bag.  It has Arthur’s name on it and the boy reaching for it is an older version of my son.
