Your mindset is everything! Quit trying to balance it all.
I’ll be the first to admit that your mindset is everything. I know that being a perfectionist has its pros and cons. However, I’ve learned over the last two years, that being an author means your To-Do-List will never be blank! Things will inevitably pop up and you’ll have to pivot accordingly.
Am I right?
Perfectionist mindset pros:
- Self-published my first book The Gingerbread Twins
- Strong determination
- Problem-solving focus
- Hyper-detailed
- Creating systems and processes for my workload
- Working for hours at a time (I’ve learned to take breaks)
- Noticing the importance of the tiny details in the big picture
- Organization
- Deadline driven
- Strong management skills
- Multi-tasking without a reduction in quality
- Ability to help others and narrow down complex concepts
Perfectionist mindset cons:
- Understanding that others have their own timelines, work speed, and response rates
- The realization that my go-go-go drive can be viewed as exhausting by others
- Varying degrees of patience (or lack thereof) with the process and adapting to the hiccups along the way
- The reverse of many of the pros above (depending on the day and my workload)
Although, as generic as it sounds, prioritize what needs your attention now vs. later. I really try to use my perfectionism to my advantage when working and helping others. Sometimes our perceived flaws can be disguised gifts! Just make sure you’re focusing your efforts on things that really matter and move the needle forward.
There’s a big difference between being busy and being productive!
In fact, this is exactly what I did as a teacher, and I’m lucky this mindset still works now as an author! I’ll talk more about being busy vs. productive in an upcoming blog post!
My biggest takeaway has been that your mindset is everything!
